Albert Hall Museum

History of Albert Hall Museum

Construction on the museum began in 1876. When the cornerstone was laid during the visit of Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, there was a lot of uncertainty that revolved around the actual purpose of this structure.

After much consideration, then-resident surgeon Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley proposed using this location to demonstrate the skills of local artisans. An idea that sparked interest in Sawai Madho Singh II in 1880 resulted in the now-beautiful building of an industrial arts museum for the community.

Although a small museum was opened within the premises in 1881, it was not until 1887 that the construction of Albert Hall Museum was completed. It was designed by architect Samuel Swinton Jacob with assistance from Mir Tujumool Hoosain. The museum was a stepping stone to acquaint the youth and visitors with the local artistry and help the craftsmen improve their craft by leveraging a platform such as this to their advantage.
